The Funeral of Mrs Drablow
I tried to walk as quietly as I could into the church, because I saw that there were two men and the clergyman in there already. In spite of my attempt, one of the two men heard me and looked back and kept staring. I saw that he was taking my appearance in. I guess he was pitying me, because of the way he was looking at me. I felt kind of intimidated by his look, so I went to the graveyard. A moment later the men came outside as well for the ceremony. When the ceremony ended, I saw the man, who was staring at me at the church, looking for someone. I'm sure he was looking for me. Eventually his eyes found me and I saw him talking to his friend. Contrast Assignment
Arthur's emotions
When the Ainley's are telling ghost stories for quite a while Arthur gets kind of nervous. And then suddenly the the lod that had been blazing on the hearth collapsed. The room is almost totally dark. Arthur gets even more nervous and kind of scared. He wants to turn on the lights, but he's paralysed. Then the Ainley's ask Arthur if he wants to tell a ghost story, because it's tradition for them. Arthur doesn't want to and panics. He says 'No no.' 'Nothing from me.' But the Ainley's insist. Then he says: 'I am sorry to disappoint you.' 'But I have no story to tell!' and then he went quickly from the room and from the house. You could also read that Arthur did know a ghost story, a real one. One that he had been part of. But apparently he was so afraid of it and it remembered Arthur of such an awful time that he really didn't want to tell it. But at the end he calms down and goes back home. He decided to write his ghost story on paper, so he could just let it go.
